Distinguished Alumni Award

History of the Award

The Distinguished Alumni Award was first presented by the Edison Community & Sports Foundation in 2010 to honor Edison graduates for their personal achievements.  Edison High School has a rich, vibrant, and diverse heritage spanning 100 years.  During that century, Edison has many graduates that are well deserving of this award.  The Distinguished Alumni Award is a lasting tribute to the Northeast community of the accomplishments of so many Edison High School graduates.  By recognizing the achievements of past graduates, we present an inspirational example to current students of the endless opportunities that are well within their reach.

Since 2010 this prestigious award has been presented to over 20 alumni for their vast accomplishments.

The Edison Community & Sports Foundation’s goal is to honor primarily living but also deceased graduates of Edison High School that have achieved considerable success in their field, contributed significantly to Edison or the community or otherwise achieved personal recognition.

Selection Criteria

Candidates must have graduated from Edison High School.  Candidates may be nominated by anyone.  The application form can be completed by the candidate or the nominator.  The application form will be kept on file for five years.  If the candidate still wishes to be considered after five years, a new application is required.

Nominations made will be based on, but not limited to, the following:

  • Success in business or entrepreneurship
  • Professional awards or recognition in their field
  • Consistent contributions or involvement with Edison
  • Recognized community involvement, either as a volunteer or elected official
  • Recognized act of heroism
  • Success in the entertainment industry or in the arts
  • Military honors

Selection Procedures

Selection Procedure for Living Candidates:  Application forms for living candidates can be submitted year-round.  The Distinguished Alumni committee will screen the submitted applications prior to the February meeting of the Edison Community & Sports Foundation and present the eligible living candidate’s information to the Board members at the February meeting.  No more than four living candidates will be on the ballot.  The members present at the February meeting will vote on accepting the living candidates as Distinguished Alumni.  Members will vote for no more than two living candidates.  The two living candidates with the most votes will receive the award.   In case of a tie, additional votes will be taken.   A quorum of the Board of Directors is necessary.

Selection Procedure for Deceased Candidates:  Application forms for deceased candidates can be submitted year-round.  The Distinguished Alumni committee will screen the submitted applications prior to the February meeting of the Edison Community & Sports Foundation and present the eligible deceased candidate’s information to the Board members at the February meeting.  No more than two deceased candidates will be on the ballot.  At the sole discretion of the Board, the Broad may consider adding one deceased person as a Distinguished Alumni each year.  If the Board members present at the February meeting decide to vote and accept a deceased candidate as the Distinguished Alumni, the members will then vote for one deceased candidate.   The one deceased candidate with the most votes will receive the award.   In case of a tie, additional votes will be taken.   A quorum of the Board of Directors is necessary.

Post Award Process

The committee Chairman will notify the new Distinguished Alumni and invite them, to attend either or both, the annual Recognition Day program held at Edison High School each May, or the Niles Schulz Scholarship Dinner event, where they will be presented with a plaque. If the Distinguished Alumni is unable to attend, either event, a personal representative will be invited by the Broad to receive the award. A duplicate plaque will be permanently displayed at Edison High School.
