Sadly, Niles Schulz died on Tuesday July 10, 2018 in a canoeing accident in the BWCA. He was canoeing and camping with his grandson Richard and his friends John Vandermyde Sr. and John Vandermyde Jr. and Alex Vandermyde. They were introducing their 8 year old grandsons and sons to a place they loved.

After graduating from Zumbrota High School and Augsburg University, Niles left a legacy in Northeast Minneapolis and at Edison High School as an English teacher, coaching football and wrestling. He was an active volunteer with many organizations: Edison Community & Sports Foundation, PFLAG/PFund, Aids Bike Rides, teaching English to U of M visiting scholars, and tutoring young readers at Pratt Community School.

Niles was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, teacher, coach, mentor and friend. He influenced the lives of many people, especially in Northeast Minneapolis. His was a life well lived! In the words of his favorite poet, Robert Frost, Niles still had “miles to go” but through us his legacy lives on.

A Celebration of Life in memory of Niles R. Schulz will be held on Sunday, August 12, 2018 in the Edison High School auditorium followed by a gathering at Solar Arts Building.

1:00 pm to 2:45 pm: Meet and visit with the Schulz Family in the Alumni Room at Edison High School.
3:00 pm to 4:30 pm: Program to Celebrate Niles Schulz's Life in the auditorium at Edison High School.
4:30 pm to 5:00 pm: March New Orleans style down Monroe Street to the Solar Arts Building, led by the Edison High School Alumni Marching Band.
5:00 pm to 7:30 pm: Continue the Celebration of Niles Schulz's Life at the Solar Arts Building. Cash Bar.

If able, please RSVP HERE. All are welcome to attend regardless of response.

People are encouraged to wear Edison Blue and Gold casual attire.

In memory of Niles’ Legacy, contributions can be made to Edison Community & Sports Foundation or Save the Boundary Waters.
